The Lion’s Head
The Lion’s Head is a unique phenomenon, declared a natural landmark on May 13, 1947, located at one of the highest points in the Ropotamo Reserve.
The rock formation resembles a lion’s head in profile. It is situated along the course of the Ropotamo River, in the high parts of the reserve of the same name. The place is associated with the name of Valchan Voyvoda, and for this reason, it is also popularly known as Valchanovo Kale.
The peak is accessible via a marked trail, but it should not be attempted without a guide. The terrain is difficult, and in places dangerous, with snakes and other animals present.
At the very top are the walls of the oldest fortress south of Burgas – the medieval fortress town of Ranuli – and the remains of an ancient church.
