Rositsa – Lagat State Hunting Area

The State Hunting Area Rositsa – Lagat is situated on the northern slopes of the Central Balkan Mountains, in the Lagat locality.

The reserve is located about 35 km from Sevlievo and 220 km from Sofia. It spans a total area of approximately 15,000 hectares, characterized predominantly by mountainous terrain with elevations ranging from 250 to 1,430 meters.

Rositsa Hunting Area offers classic hunts for red deer, wild boar, roe deer, brown bear, and predators (wolves). Drive hunting is highly organized and yields some of the best results among all free hunting zones.

The favorable natural conditions contribute to the development of a strong red deer population with excellent trophy quality. The average weight is around 8-10 kg, with animals weighing 10-11 kg harvested almost annually. Wild boar tusks range from 20-22 cm to 25 cm. Roe deer hunting is particularly popular, with the large population allowing significant harvests, typically with trophies weighing 300-400 grams.

Care for deer, wild boar, roe deer, and bears has become a tradition in the reserve. Wolves, a natural companion to hoofed game, indicate that the area’s wild nature is still thriving. The charm of the Balkan Mountains, the abundance of big game, a cozy hunting lodge, and experienced guides create excellent conditions not only for hunting but also for relaxation in pristine nature.

Rositsa offers accommodations at a hunting residence—a beautiful three-story Alpine-style building located in the picturesque valley of the Zelenikovets River. It can host up to 15 guests in four apartments, two double rooms, and three single rooms.

Rositsa is one of the first hunting reserves in the country to receive an international certification ensuring sustainable and responsible forest management.

The reserve has a processing and storage facility for game meat that meets all European standards. It supplies boned and vacuum-packed meat from roe deer, red deer, fallow deer, and wild boar annually to both Bulgaria and the EU. Signature products include several types of game sausages.

In addition to hunting experiences, the reserve offers horseback riding, photo safaris, eco-tourism, and trout fishing. Nearby towns rich in history and tourist attractions include Gabrovo, Veliko Tarnovo, Lovech, Troyan Monastery, Dryanovo Monastery, and more. For ethnography enthusiasts, excursions to the Open-Air Ethnographic Museum Etar and the Bozhentsi Ethnographic Village are organized.
