Osogovo State Hunting Area

The State Hunting Area Osogovo, established in 1996, takes its name from the picturesque Osogovo Mountain.

The reserve is located about 90 km from Sofia and the nearest airport. Its terrain is typically mountainous and highly rugged, making it a true challenge for the physical preparation of hunters. Mount Ruen, standing at 2,251 meters, is the highest peak in the Osogovo Mountain.

At the foot of the mountain, the largest rivers in the area—Bistritsa and Eleshnitsa, tributaries of the Struma River—originate. The total area of state forest lands is 19,759 hectares, with nearly 64% designated as protected zones under Natura 2000.

In the Osogovo Hunting Area, game species include wild boar, roe deer, wolves, and foxes. Hares and martens are also present. Birds include partridge, chukar, wood pigeon, and quail.

Some of the most notable trophies from Osogovo, awarded gold medals, are: Roe deer: 148.80 points, weighing 475 grams, Wolf: 43 points, Wild boar: 123.20 points, with tusks measuring 23.3 cm.

Guests of the hunting reserve are welcomed at the Bor Hunting Lodge, which offers nine rooms with a total of 18 beds. The lodge provides excellent living conditions, a fine dining kitchen, and a selection of wines and specialties.

Beyond hunting experiences, the Osogovo Hunting Area offers guests excellent opportunities for relaxation and enjoyable activities amidst the unique nature of Osogovo Mountain.

Additional activities include photo safaris, horseback riding, fishing, and eco-friendly tourism. Shelters, rest areas, and camping spots have been built in harmony with the natural environment.

For those interested in history, religion, art, and culture, nearby attractions include the Rila Monastery, Ruen Monastery, Zemen Monastery, and the gallery of Vladimir Dimitrov – Maistora.
