Dunav State Hunting Area

The State Hunting Area Dunav, located in the picturesque northern parts of the Ruse region, is one of the most attractive hunting destinations in Northeastern Bulgaria.

With a natural border formed by the Danube River and spanning the territories of several municipalities, the area offers a rich variety of hunting experiences.

Situated in the eastern part of the Danubian Plain, the hunting area includes plateau regions and lowlands along the Danube River. The diverse vegetation, ranging from oaks and birches to black pines, provides an ideal environment for various game species.

The terrain of the hunting area is hilly and flat, featuring a plateau section bordered by the Danube and Rusenski Lom Rivers, with canyon-like landscapes and lowland areas along the Danube to the east of Ruse.

Reforestation efforts in the region have contributed to the creation of unique poplar plantations along the banks of the Danube and Rusenski Lom Rivers. The forested area of the hunting reserve is extensive, covering 22,075 hectares, with 91% of the land being wooded.

The hunting grounds span 5,627 hectares, divided into four hunting zones, where species such as red deer, roe deer, wild boar, pheasants, and partridges can be hunted. Among the best trophies harvested in the Dunav Hunting Area are: Red deer (13.5 kg, rated at 250 CIC points), Roe deer (505 grams), Wild boar (trophies exceeding 220 CIC points).

In 2015, a red deer with antlers weighing 13.1 kg and rated at 233.55 CIC points was hunted on Batin Island.

Predators such as wolves, foxes, and wildcats are present, along with a variety of birds, including wood pigeons and quails. Pheasant hunting is particularly popular, conducted in designated areas with the assistance of dogs. The pheasants are primarily farm-raised, but wild ones are also found.

For guest accommodations, the State Hunting Area Dunav offers three hunting lodges: Batakliata, Batin Island, and the Nikovo Hunting Lodge. These provide comfortable lodging and are equipped with all amenities for a relaxing and enjoyable hunting tourism experience.

For nature and culture enthusiasts, the area offers a wide range of eco-tourism, photo safaris, historical sites, churches, and monasteries.
