Thrace State Hunting Area
The State Hunting Area Thrace, located in the heart of Southern Bulgaria, encompasses parts of Sarnena Sredna Gora, the Upper Thracian Plain, and the Central Rhodopes.
Established in 1902, the primary goal of the reserve is to maintain and enhance wildlife populations in the region, particularly small feathered game.
Today, the Thrace Hunting Area is renowned for its diverse wildlife, including rare and protected species, making it a popular destination for hunters and tourists interested in birdwatching and outdoor activities.
The reserve spans a total area of 33,785 hectares, featuring predominantly mountainous terrain with significant elevation differences between its highest point, Mount Modar (1,992 meters) in the Rhodopes, and its lowest point along the Maritsa River. This varied landscape provides ideal habitats for a wide range of wild animals.
The diverse landscape of Thrace is home to a rich array of wildlife, including roe deer, pheasants, partridges, hares, and many migratory species. The unique combination of habitats in the area also supports rare and endemic species such as brown bears, red deer, wild boar, mouflons, fallow deer, capercaillies, and chamois.
The reserve offers accommodations at four locations: Chekeritsa Hunting Residence, Chekeritsa Hunting Lodge, Churenska Reka Hunting Lodge, and Gradina Hunting Lodge.
Guests can also enjoy photo safaris, capturing images of the remarkable local wildlife. In addition to hunting and photo safaris, the Thrace Hunting Area organizes day trips to various cultural and historical landmarks in the region.
Visitors can explore the Bachkovo Monastery, St. Kirik Monastery, the archaeological sites and winery near the village of Starosel, the architectural reserve of Old Plovdiv, and many more. These additional attractions allow guests to fully immerse themselves in the rich heritage and natural beauty of the region.
