Sandanska Bistritsa Waterfall (Popinolashki)
The waterfall in the Popina Luka area is located northeast of Sandanski, about 18 km from the city center, at the foot of the Pirin Mountains.
It is situated at an altitude of 1,230 meters along the course of the Bashlitsa River, before its confluence with the Sarchalitsa River, forming the Sandanska Bistritsa River.
The waterfall is 15 meters high and is carved into a rock massif. It is conventionally divided into two parts—the first with a height of about 10 meters and the second with a height of about 5 meters.
The waterfall is full-flowing throughout the year and over time has formed a deep pool. It was declared a natural landmark in 1965.
The area is very beautiful, surrounded by coniferous forest and serves as a starting point for various hiking routes in the mountains. Nearby is the Yane Sandanski Hut.
The road to Popina Luka is paved but narrow, and caution should be exercised while driving. In many places, it is difficult for cars to pass each other, and waiting is necessary.
Despite the challenging road, the waterfall is easily accessible by car, located on the left side of the road when entering Popina Luka from the direction of Sandanski.
There is a parking area in the vicinity, along with numerous hotels and traditional inns.
