Tuteva House
On April 20, 1876, news reached Panagyurishte that Koprivshtitsa had risen in rebellion.
Following this news, on this memorable date, the four Apostles – Georgi Benkovski, Panayot Volov, Zahari Stoyanov, and Georgi Ikonomov – came out of Tuteva House to announce the uprising in Panagyurishte. In a burst of enthusiasm, Volov fired his rifle twice.
Ivan Tutev was a wealthy merchant from Panagyurishte and a participant in the revolutionary movement. His house was built between 1873 and 1874 and painted in 1857 by Ivan Galabov from Panagyurishte.
Tuteva House survived the turbulent events and remains intact to this day, just as it was during the April Uprising.
It is a cultural monument of national significance and has been turned into a museum.
The exhibit “April 20, 1876” is dedicated to this immortal date for the Bulgarian people.
The house recreates the authentic atmosphere of that day – the guest room where the Apostles stayed and the room used by the clerks.
A replica of the Karlovo flag, which the Apostles waved with the cries “Revolt! To arms!”, is also displayed.
